Who is Ajani Goldmane?

Ajani Goldmane is one of the most iconic and enduring planeswalkers in the Magic: The Gathering (MTG) multiverse. A leonin warrior hailing from the shard of Naya on the plane of Alara, Ajani is renowned for his unwavering sense of justice, fierce loyalty, and profound abilities in soul magic. Often aligned with white mana, he embodies themes of protection, healing, and community, using his powers to uplift the weak and confront oppressors. Over the years, Ajani has evolved from an outcast in his own pride to a mentor figure among planeswalkers, playing pivotal roles in major story arcs like the Conflux of Alara, the War of the Spark, and the Phyrexian Invasion. His journey is marked by personal tragedy, growth, and redemption, making him a fan-favorite character whose story reflects resilience in the face of adversity.

As a planeswalker, Ajani has appeared in numerous MTG sets since his debut in Lorwyn (2007), with cards that highlight his auramancy, life-boosting effects, and token generation. His narrative spans novels, web stories, and card flavor text, drawing from influences like leonin pride dynamics and themes of albinism as a metaphor for otherness. This article compiles his full biography, drawing from official lore, fan analyses, and key events up to the present day in the MTG storyline (as of 2025), aiming to serve as the definitive resource for understanding this noble hero.

Early Life on Naya

Ajani was born around 4527 AR (Argivian Reckoning) as an albino Nacatl leonin in the Qasal Valley on Naya, a lush, jungle-dominated shard of the fragmented plane Alara. His stark white fur, described as “white as death,” immediately set him apart from his pride, where such traits were seen as omens of weakness or misfortune. This led to Ajani being treated as an outcast from a young age, enduring ridicule and isolation. He lost his left eye to the plane’s perils during his youth, further marking him as different.

Despite the prejudice, Ajani found solace in his older brother, Jazal Goldmane, who was the only family member to truly care for him. Jazal rose to become the kha (leader) of the Qasal pride, advocating for Ajani’s inclusion in the hope that his brother’s status would foster acceptance. However, Ajani remained barely tolerated. He formed a close bond with the tribe’s shaman, Zaliki, who became one of his few friends.

Ajani’s unique gift for soul magic emerged early. Unlike typical leonin warriors who relied on physical prowess, he could peer into the spirits of others, manifesting their essence to heal wounds and bolster strength. This made him the pride’s most skilled healer, though it earned him no prestige in a society that valued martial glory over mystical arts. His inability to use this magic on himself—limited to enhancing allies—symbolized his self-sacrificial nature, a trait that would define his later adventures.

Ignition of the Planeswalker Spark

Ajani’s life changed irrevocably during the Festival of Marisi, an annual Nacatl celebration honoring the “Breaking of the Coil”—a ritual symbolizing freedom from restraint. Unusual human attackers targeted Ajani specifically, escalating tensions. During a preparatory hunt, his kill was stolen by a rival named Tenoch, leading to a brutal beating after Ajani revealed his soul-seeing ability in anger.

That night, a mysterious dark figure summoned shades using forbidden magic, slaughtering many in the pride, including Jazal, who was slain with his own black axe. Cradling his brother’s body, Ajani heard Jazal’s voice urging him onward. In a surge of grief and rage, Ajani’s planeswalker spark ignited, transporting him to the volcanic shard of Jund. This event, tied to the manipulations of the elder dragon Nicol Bolas, marked Ajani’s entry into the wider multiverse and set him on a path of vengeance and discovery.

Adventures on Alara: The Conflux and Beyond

On Jund, Ajani encountered the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol, who protected him from a dragon assault and encouraged him to channel his anger to hunt Jazal’s killer.  Returning to Naya, Ajani forged a new axe from Jazal’s remains and confronted Tenoch, but both fell from a cliff in the struggle. Gravely injured, Ajani planeswalked to Bant, where he was nursed back to health by the knight Elspeth Tirel—a fateful meeting that forged a deep, sibling-like bond.

Back on Naya amid the plane-shattering Conflux (the merging of Alara’s shards), Ajani uncovered that his friend Zaliki, under the influence of the ancient cat-demon Marisi (manipulated by Bolas), had orchestrated Jazal’s death. Leading armies against invading dragons, Ajani banished Bolas from Alara by channeling the Maelstrom’s chaotic energies. He declined the role of kha, entrusting it to Zaliki, and departed to seek Elspeth.

In the story “Ajani’s Debt,” he found her in Urborg’s gladiator pits, disillusioned by Bant’s corruption post-Conflux. Unable to persuade her to return, Ajani left her armor as a parting gift, honoring her independence.

Journey to Theros: Loss and Legacy

Tracking Elspeth to Theros, Ajani reunited with her and allied with King Brimaz of the leonin there. They navigated the plane’s godly intrigues, confronting the kraken planeswalker Kiora and the satyr-god Xenagos in Nyx, the realm of dreams.   Elspeth slew Xenagos, but the sun god Heliod betrayed and murdered her. Devastated, Ajani exposed Heliod’s treachery in Meletis, earning a place among Theros’ leonin. He adopted Elspeth’s cloak as a memento, vowing to honor her memory.

Joining the Gatewatch: Kaladesh, Dominaria, and Mentorship

After a period on Kamigawa with the moonfolk planeswalker Tamiyo, Ajani pursued the artificer Tezzeret to Kaladesh. There, he aided the Renegades against the Consulate, rescuing allies like Oviya Pashiri, Nissa Revane, and Chandra Nalaar.  Joining the Gatewatch—the multiverse’s coalition of planeswalkers—he cautioned against rash action toward Bolas on Amonkhet.

On Dominaria, Ajani recruited Jhoira and the Weatherlight crew but departed when priorities shifted to the demon Belzenlok. His mentorship role solidified, guiding younger walkers like Chandra in harnessing their emotions.

The War of the Spark

Trapped on Ravnica by Bolas’ Immortal Sun during the War of the Spark, Ajani battled the Eternals’ Dreadhorde invasion. He summoned aetherial leonin warriors, rallied planeswalkers, and evacuated civilians.  Surviving the conflict, he attended Gideon’s memorial on Theros, reflecting on losses.

The Phyrexian Invasion and Compleation

As New Phyrexia’s invasion escalated, Ajani strategized with Karn on Dominaria and reunited with a revived Elspeth, sending her to investigate her home plane.   Sent to rescue Karn from Phyrexia, Ajani was captured during a Keldon-Benalish summit and “compleated”—transformed into a biomechanical sleeper agent aligned with Elesh Norn’s Machine Orthodoxy. His compleated form twisted his values, seeing Phyrexia as the ultimate “pride” that accepted him. He killed Jaya Ballard, destroyed the Golgothian Sylex, and captured Karn.

In The Brothers’ War storyline, compleated Ajani attempted to thwart Teferi’s time-travel efforts, clashing over the Weatherlight’s powerstone core but was ultimately defeated.

During the climactic events of March of the Machine (2023), Ajani and other compleated planeswalkers were de-compleated using the angelic substance Halo, restoring their original forms and freeing them from Phyrexian influence. This redemption arc allowed Ajani to reclaim his sense of justice, though the trauma of his actions under compleation lingers in recent lore.  Post-invasion, Ajani has appeared in supporting roles, such as in Outlaws of Thunder Junction (2024), where he aids in multiversal recovery efforts, emphasizing themes of healing and unity.

Abilities and Powers

Ajani specializes in auramancy and soul magic, enhancing allies’ life forces to boost strength, grant vigilance, or create protective tokens.   His powers include manifesting spiritual avatars (like leonin warriors), healing grievous wounds, and channeling rage into righteous fury. As a white-mana user, he excels in protection and community-building spells, though he cannot apply them to himself. In compleated form, his abilities were augmented with Phyrexian oil, allowing for invasive control, but these were purged upon de-compleation.

Physical Description and Personality

Ajani is a towering leonin with white fur, a golden mane, and a single eye (his left lost in youth). He wields a double-bladed axe forged from Jazal’s and often wears Elspeth’s cloak.   Personality-wise, he balances leonin ferocity with deep compassion, believing the strong must protect the weak.  Once driven by vengeance, he has grown into a wise mentor, offering guidance without judgment. His albinism informs his empathy for outcasts, and his losses have instilled a profound sense of duty.
