Krakenmarus
The Lurkers of the Bays
The Krakenmarus are a formidable race of marine creatures that make their home in the warm waters of the Bay of Ambrolene. While this is their primary habitat, they are also known to venture into the Herbrozian Bay, though only during the warm summer months. It is believed that an intricate, subterranean water tunnel, running deep beneath a portion of Lokia, connects these two great bays. This passage allows them to travel between the two locations, seeking the warmer waters of Ambrolene during the colder winter season.
These creatures have a unique physiology that allows them to thrive both in and out of the water. Their survival is dependent on exposure to salt or brackish water; they will perish if they are separated from it for too long. They possess both mammal-like lungs for breathing air and a set of gills located alongside their dorsal fin for extracting oxygen from water. This dual respiratory system grants them the ability to come ashore for extended periods, but they must return to the water within twenty-four hours to survive.
Krakenmarus are a highly social and communal race, living in large, organized underwater societies. They never venture onto land alone, instead hunting in packs of at least six. These hunting parties rarely travel more than a couple of miles inland, focusing their predatory instincts on the shores and coasts. As a race, they maintain a position of neutrality in the land-based struggles for power that plague the continent. However, this neutrality does not extend to their prey; they will hunt and devour humans and any other surface-dwelling creatures they believe they can overpower.
Due to their growing numbers, sailing and swimming in both the Bay of Ambrolene and the Herbrozian Bay have become increasingly perilous. The Krakenmarus appear to be thriving, and their expansion into both bays poses a growing threat to anyone who dares to venture too close to their watery domain.
